Enabling Netflix Support in Chromium

The Chromium browser included in Fenix Ubuntu version 1.7.4+ supports playback of DRM-protected videos from websites like Netflix and Prime Video by installing the Widevine Content Decryption Module (CDM) library. Follow this guide to install it.

Video playback will be limited to lower resolutions (typically up to 480p), as Widevine L1 support is only available for Chromium-based browsers on the Windows platform.

Install Widevine Library

To play DRM-protected content, the Widevine CDM must be installed. Follow these steps:

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. Run sudo fenix-config.
  3. Navigate to Software > Widevine CDM.
  4. Select Install Widevine CDM.

Verifying Widevine Detection in Chromium

Use the following steps to verify that the Chromium browser has successfully detected the Widevine CDM library.

  1. Open a new tab in Chromium.
  2. Go to chrome://media-internals.
  3. Switch to the CDMs tab.

You should see output similar to the screenshot below:
